Our fireplace makeover

Our home, while a modest craftsman style has a rather impressive entrance with high ceilings and wood panelling. As you entered the living room, you were faced with a bit of an eyesore. The fireplace.

Here is the fireplace as it was.

This was just a few days after we took possession of our home. We had started the process of stripping the walls of layers of wallpaper.

You can see lots of other renovations going on. We had to wait for our insert to arrive before we could proceed. Patience is a virtue!

Step one is complete.

The insert is installed and we love it. Now we could make it pretty, just like our vision.

Our carpenter was able to build the mantel and surround bit by bit, adding or subtracting details as he went until we were all happy with the new look.

Almost there!

The finished makeover.

What was once an eyesore is now a beautiful feature in the living room. It suits the era and style of our home beautifully.

Now, as you enter the living room from the front vestibule, it just feels right.

I think it is very welcoming.

The wide mantel is also really lovely for decorating for Christmas.
